How does it work?

My husband, James Lehman, was a behavioral therapist who specialized in working with children and teens with behavior problems—often severe problems. The methodology he used was cognitive behavioral therapy—an approach to behavior management that maintains if you change the way a child thinks and solves problems, he can change his behavior.

James knew the power of cognitive behavioral techniques on a very personal level because it was what he used to turn his own life around as a young adult. Much has been written about his personal transformation from an out-of-control teen drug addict who wound up in prison, to a hands-on therapist who helped turn around seemingly “hopeless” kids. Every word of it is true. I know. I was married to him for 33 years, and I worked alongside him.

As a social worker who has dealt with hundreds of behaviorally troubled children, I have found James’ techniques to be remarkably effective. James knew how to express behavior management concepts in a way that parents can understand and use immediately. What’s the real story behind
The Total Transformation Program?

Six years ago, my son was entering adolescence, and I was going through the trials and tribulations every parent of an adolescent experiences. Why was everything suddenly so hard? I went looking for information on parenting and was astounded at how little was actually available for parents. The need for a real, solid, “how to” parenting program was glaringly obvious.

So I launched a national search to find a parenting expert and build a program that we could publish and market nationally. It was tough. I talked to a lot of well-meaning people who had what seemed like “psychobabble” to me. It wasn’t information I could use.

Then a dear friend introduced me to James Lehman—a social worker who was putting in 12-hour days working with troubled children right here in our backyard in Maine. We met. We clicked. I watched him in action with parents, and I couldn’t stop talking about him. James and I resolved to create The Total Transformation Program.
